Background of the Study

Wound care management is a critical aspect of nursing practice that plays a significant role in preventing infections and promoting healing. In Katsina State, as in many parts of Nigeria, improper wound care practices contribute to high rates of wound infections, prolonged hospital stays, and increased healthcare costs. Infection prevention through proper wound care is essential to ensuring positive outcomes for patients undergoing surgeries, trauma care, or chronic wound treatment.

Nurses are at the forefront of wound care management, responsible for cleaning, dressing, and monitoring wounds for signs of infection. However, despite the importance of effective wound care, there is often a lack of adherence to best practices and guidelines. This study will explore the impact of proper wound care management on infection prevention and healing outcomes in Katsina State, providing valuable insights into the role of nursing interventions in reducing wound-related infections.

Statement of the Problem

In Katsina State, many patients experience poor outcomes due to inadequate wound care practices, leading to infections that complicate recovery and extend hospital stays. Nurses' knowledge and adherence to proper wound care protocols are crucial to preventing infections, but studies suggest that poor techniques and insufficient resources contribute to high infection rates. This study seeks to examine the relationship between proper wound care management by nurses and the reduction of infections in Katsina State.

Objectives of the Study

1. To evaluate the effectiveness of proper wound care management in preventing infections in Katsina State.

2. To assess the role of nurses in implementing infection prevention strategies through proper wound care.

3. To identify challenges and barriers to effective wound care management in Katsina State.

Research Questions

1. How does proper wound care management impact infection prevention in Katsina State?

2. What role do nurses play in the prevention of wound infections through proper wound care?

3. What challenges do nurses face in implementing effective wound care management in Katsina State?

Research Hypotheses

1. Proper wound care management significantly reduces the incidence of infections in patients in Katsina State.

2. Nurses' adherence to best practices in wound care is associated with improved infection prevention outcomes in Katsina State.

3. Limited resources and training hinder nurses’ ability to provide optimal wound care in Katsina State.

Definitions of Terms

• Infection Prevention: Strategies employed to prevent the introduction and spread of infections, particularly in patients with open wounds.

• Nurses' Role: The active involvement of nurses in assessing, cleaning, dressing, and providing education on wound care practices.
